Eurocopter Sets Up New Development Centers as Part of its Ambitious Innovation Program
Marignane, July 16, 2012 |
“Our innovation policy has always been very ambitious and will remain so in the coming years,” said Eurocopter President and CEO Lutz Bertling. “It allows us to stay well ahead of our competitors when it comes to technological advances and it is a significant help in maintaining our position as a world leader in the civil and parapublic markets. We are continuing to invest in innovation and infrastructures by equipping our development teams with the most modern and suitable resources, enabling them to rise to the challenges of creating the helicopters of the future.”
A topping off ceremony was held in Donauwörth last Friday to celebrate the end of structural work of the new development center for around 900 engineers, with a total floor area of 30,000 square meters. Due for delivery at the end of this year, this new building forms part of the Systemhaus project and aims to bring together, all under one roof, the resources, skills and means required to develop, produce and certify helicopters and to assure their maintenance. As a result, the workforce currently based at Ottobrunn will be moving to join their Donauwörth colleagues in the spring of 2013.
In parallel to the ceremony in Donauwörth, the entire project for the construction of a development center at Marignane was approved on July 13. The project began with the refurbishment of the Labogir building (vehicle and mechanical test benches), which was inaugurated today, and the construction of the Helicopter Zero building (test benches integrating various helicopter systems), to be delivered in April 2013. The flagship of Marignane’s future development center will be a new building: planned for delivery in early 2015, it will accommodate up to 1,000 people and house, in particular, the “plateau” for the new programs under development. Groundbreaking is scheduled for July 2013. Finally, the existing Design Office building will be renovated and new facilities housing avionics test benches will be built.

Eurocopter delivers four EC225s to Blueway Group for operations in the North Sea
Marignane, July 12, 2012 |
The new EC225s in offshore crew change configuration are operated out of Esbjerg, Denmark, by DanCopter, a 100% owned subsidiary of Blueway Group in the frame of a contract awarded by the Danish company Maersk Oil & Gas, which began on July 1 of this year.
The addition of these 19-passenger EC225 helicopters to Blueway’s offshore fleet, which has previously been comprised of medium sized helicopters in the 11 to 13 seat range, including Eurocopter’s EC155, marks the beginning of the company’s operations in the heavy segment.
“The arrival of this aircraft type - one of the largest in the Eurocopter range - to Blueway’s fleet represents an important milestone in the devolvement of this fast growing company,” said Dominique Maudet, Eurocopter’s executive vice president Global Business and Services. “Considering the experience and high degree of professionalism of both Blueway and Dancopter, in combination with Eurocopter’s close support, I have no doubt that the introduction of these new EC225s will also be a grand success. Eurocopter wishes both companies all the best with their increasing scope of operations, and will be very happy to accompany them on this challenging and interesting path.”
Blueway and Dancopter have recently been awarded two new contracts for offshore operations with Shell out of Den Helder, Netherlands, and Norwich, England, which require 4 to 5 of Eurocopter’s medium weight EC155s. In addition, DanCopter, in a joint venture with Caverton Helicopter of Nigeria, has successfully performed crew change operations for Shell in Nigeria since 2010. Blueway is also the first helicopter operator in the world to sign an international Enterprise Framework Agreement for offshore flight operations with Shell.
Johnny Skoglund, CEO of the Blueway Group underscored the strong dynamics in the company: “The contracts with Shell and Maersk represent important milestones in the realization of the Blueway Group's growth strategy. The operations for Shell in Nigeria since 2010 have demonstrated our ability to establish and run a world class operation anywhere in the world with a short leadtime. Several contracts on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, to begin in 2014 and 2015 are in the tendering process and have a heavy, 19-passenger helicopter requirement. With the new contracts in our home market in the North Sea, we represent a true challenge to competitors in the offshore crew change market.”
Eurocopter’s EC225 offers optimal safety with superior speed, range, payload and reliability. Deployed worldwide for offshore and passenger transport flights as well as civil and military search and rescue (SAR) missions, it is the latest-generation member of the Super Puma/Cougar family. More than 140 aircraft have entered service since 2005 accumulating more than 250,000 flight hours. In the global oil & gas industry alone, there are currently some 70 EC225s in operation around the world.
This aircraft is perfectly adapted for operations in adverse weather conditions. Designed to meet the highest safety requirements, it is backed by system redundancy, a highly capable automatic flight control system and the capability for full deicing, which allows for flight in all known icing conditions.

Major milestone achieved on Eurocopter’s Puma Mk2 helicopter upgrade program for the UK Ministry of Defence
Farnborough, England, July 9, 2012 The upgrade of UK Ministry of Defence Puma aircraft took a major step forward last week with Eurocopter completing its first internal qualification of the Puma Mk2 aircraft. This upgrade will significantly enhance the aircraft’s performance, mission capability and safety. The first modified aircraft will fly into the UK in the coming weeks to conclude test and evaluation activities at QinetiQ’s Boscombe Down facility. |
Eurocopter’s first internal qualification of the Puma Mk2 was achieved on July 6, concluding the first phase of the planned developments, with further enhancements to its mission capabilities planned over the coming months. To date, Eurocopter has completed the initial upgrade process on three Puma helicopters, all of which are now involved in flight testing. The first of these will be delivered to QinetiQ’s Boscombe Down military test and evaluation center for further trials.
The Puma Mk2 helicopters represent a key element of the UK’s medium battlefield support helicopter capability, and will be deployed for tactical troop and load movement by day and night. The upgrade will extend the operational lifetime and significantly upgrade the capabilities of 24 of the Royal Air Force Puma helicopters. The new Puma is an ideal medium lift platform for urban operations and its ability to be rapidly deployed by C17 make it the ideal platform for fast moving contingent combat and humanitarian operations.
“This qualification milestone marks another important accomplishment in a program that is vital for the UK’s combat capabilities, and it results equally from Eurocopter’s commitment to its success and our close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence,” said Markus Steinke, the Managing Director of Eurocopter UK. “Once upgraded, Puma Mk2s will be serving the Royal Air Force until 2025, offering exceptional performance and capability that is excellent value for the money.”
Enhancements for the Puma Mk2 include major performance and safety improvements with the use of new Makila 1A1 turboshaft engines; the integration of a full glass cockpit incorporating modern avionics and a flight management system; the implementation of a digital automatic flight control system; as well as the incorporation of a secure communications suite, new defensive aids and ballistic protection for crew and passengers. Additionally, the helicopter’s greater onboard fuel capacity and lower fuel consumption will increase the Puma Mk2’s operating range. The Puma will be able to carry twice the payload over three times the range than its predecessor even in the most demanding of environmental conditions.

Eurocopter’s Farnborough Airshow presence to focus on the mission operability and performance of its enhanced helicopter product line
Farnborough, England, July 5, 2012 Eurocopter’s participation at the 2012 Farnborough Airshow will highlight the capabilities of the company’s growing rotorcraft family – including the new EC175, a new seven metric ton-category helicopter which is setting the standard for cabin size, mission payload and range performance. |
For its appearance in the biennial UK industry event, the EC175 is to be exhibited on the static display at Farnborough Airport beginning July 9, and will join daily flying presentations during the week.
Designed to offer superior mission versatility, Eurocopter’s twin-engine EC175 sets the standards for medium-class helicopters in offshore oil and gas operations, search and rescue, VIP/corporate airlift and other missions. Deliveries will start following the certification planned at the end of this year with the EC175 in the oil and gas configuration.
“With its enhanced performance, state-of-the-art technology and high safety standards, the EC175 represents the best in Eurocopter’s application of innovation as we expand our helicopter product line,” said Eurocopter President & CEO Lutz Bertling.
The EC175’s baseline payload/radius-of-action capacity with 16 passengers at 135 nautical miles for offshore oil and gas missions out-performs any medium-lift helicopter on the market in terms of competitiveness. For longer-range missions, the EC175 can transport 12 passengers to a radius-of-action of 190 nautical miles. Eurocopter has also launched an 18-passenger configuration option with a 100 nautical mile radius-of-action.
For search and rescue applications, EC175 operators will benefit from a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art equipment, including an integrated mission system that provides crew members with high-resolution sensor images at a cabin-installed mission console display and on a central instrument panel mission display in the cockpit.
The EC175’s search and rescue configuration has an electro-optic sensor turret with large sensor ball installed under the helicopter’s streamlined nose. The weather/search radar is located in the nose, and a side-mounted high intensity searchlight – complemented by under-fuselage lights – delivers superior illumination of the search area.
For rescue missions, the EC175’s dual high-speed hoist installation at the right-hand sliding door provides SAR operators a high level of efficiency and safety. The helicopter’s unobstructed, flat-floored cabin offers the largest volume of any medium helicopter. Sized at more than 3.8 meters long and 2.1 meters wide, it is designed to accommodate a comprehensive medical installation, the operator console, crew and passenger seats – all while preserving room to man oeuvre stretchers from the hoist through very large sliding doors.
Also contributing to the EC175’s capabilities is its 4-axis dual-duplex digital automatic flight control system (DAFCS), derived from the Eurocopter EC225 – providing pilots with unique level of stabilization, precision, assistance and flight envelope protection in the most complex search and rescue situations. Fully integrated into the helicopter’s avionics systems, the DAFCS controls ground speed down to zero knots and offers improved SAR upper modes, including search patterns and hoistman hovering authority.
Eurocopter will support EC175 operators for an easy entry into service, facilitated by such on-board maintainability- and reliability-enhancing features as a monitoring system with an on-ground maintenance reporting capability to facilitate troubleshooting, HUMS (health and usage monitoring system), along with 3D technical publications, full-flight simulators, optimized scheduled maintenance through MSG-3, and a continuous maintenance review board process incorporating input from operators.
Eurocopter’s exhibit presence at the 2012 Farnborough International Airshow will be incorporated within the dedicated pavilion of its EADS parent company (#OE13), with the company displaying 1/5 scale models of the EC175 and X3 high-speed hybrid aircraft – the latter of which is currently undertaking an historic U.S. demonstration tour for military, parapublic and civilian operators.

Eurocopter’s revolutionary X3 helicopter begins military leg of its U.S. tour
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. and HERNDON, Va. — July 2, 2012 Eurocopter continues its U.S. tour of the X3 high-speed hybrid helicopter today in Huntsville, Ala., where the aircraft will perform the first of several flight demonstrations for military leaders and aviators in several locations across the country. |
The X3 will demonstrate its unique flight characteristics, which include a cruise speed of 200 knots, high rates of climb and executing high-speed maneuvers that are not routine for conventional rotary-wing aircraft. The X3 has already demonstrated a maximum speed of 232 knots at 80 percent power and a rate of climb of 5,500 feet per minute.
The tour began when the X3 made its debut at the Grand Prairie, Texas headquarters of Eurocopter’s U.S. subsidiary – American Eurocopter – which was attended by employees, elected officials, customers and industry partners.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to demonstrate to military leaders and aviators across the country the cutting-edge technology we’ve developed with the X3,” said Eurocopter President and CEO Lutz Bertling. “With the innovative design and unmatched technology of our X3 demonstrator, we are well positioned to bring this type of helicopter to the market in the next decade.”
In addition to providing the first-ever demonstration of the X3 outside of Europe, Eurocopter’s cutting-edge innovation and tradition of rotary-wing excellence were underscored by a Grand Prairie Airport fly-in of its product range; from the pioneering Alouette and BO105 to today’s UH-72A Lakota for the U.S. Army, the U.S. Coast Guard’s MH-65C Dolphin, as well as the EC225, AS350 and EC145 – which are used in civilian operations, law enforcement, medical airlift and parapublic missions.
Some guest pilots will fly aboard the X3 during its visit to Huntsville’s Redstone Army Arsenal Airfield July 9 and 10 to experience the aircraft’s maturity and excellent handling characteristics firsthand. The X3 will then travel to Fort Bragg’s Simmons Army Airfield in North Carolina; Virginia’s Manassas Regional Airport; Davison Army Airfield at Fort Belvoir, Va., and it will finish its U.S. tour at the Pentagon.
Eurocopter’s aircraft configuration for the X3 uses a pair of turboshaft engines to power a five-blade main rotor system, along with two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings. This concept is well adapted to missions requiring long transit flights and where speed is important, while retaining vertical lift and hover capabilities – all at a very affordable cost.
The company envisions a wide range of applications for its hybrid technology in future products, including long-distance search and rescue (SAR), Coast Guard missions, border patrol missions, passenger transport and off-shore airlift, along with inter-city shuttle services. It also is well-suited for military missions in special forces operations, troop transport, combat SAR and medical evacuation – benefitting from the combination of higher cruise speeds with excellent vertical takeoff and landing performance.
Eurocopter began X3 flight testing in September 2010 at the Istres Flight Test Center in southern France, where the aircraft easily surpassed its initial speed target of 220 knots; reaching more than 230 knots in level flight while using only 80 percent of available power. Beyond confirming its excellent flight qualities, maneuverability, outstanding acceleration and deceleration capabilities, the hybrid demonstrator has shown exceptional climb and descent rates along with very low vibration levels – all without any need for passive or active anti-vibration systems.

Eurocopter completes its deliveries of 20 EC155 B1 helicopters for the German Federal Police
Blumberg, Germany, June 27, 2012 The German Federal Police today formally accepted its remaining two EC155 B1 helicopters from Eurocopter to complete an extensive fleet upgrade program involving 20 of these versatile, multi-role, twin-engine rotary-wing aircraft. |
A ceremony at Blumberg, Brandenburg marked the service entry of the 19th and 20th EC155 B1s, joining others that are deployed at German Federal Police bases throughout the country for a wide range of duties – including border patrol, transportation of personnel and special forces, along with diverse search-and-rescue missions.
With the two latest aircraft, the German Federal Police now operates a total inventory of 87 helicopters – all of which were supplied by Eurocopter.
This positions the service as Eurocopter’s largest European law enforcement customer, continuing a relationship that covers several decades. It includes the predecessor German Federal Border Guard’s role as the EC155 B1 launch customer – placing the first three production rotorcraft in service during 1999. Since then, Eurocopter has consistently enhanced the EC155 B1’s capabilities, culminating in the maritime version’s deployment for missions involving over-water flights.
Today’s acceptance ceremony was attended by Klaus Dieter Fritsche, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior; Matthias Seeger, President of the German Federal Police; and Eurocopter President and CEO Lutz Bertling.
“As an industry-leading innovator, Eurocopter works with the most advanced operators – exemplified by the German Federal Police, which has frequently contributed to enhancements incorporated in our helicopter product line,” Bertling said. “Such a two-way dialog has enabled Eurocopter to become no. 1 in the police and public service helicopter marketplace.”
Speaking on behalf of the German Federal Police, Seeger said his service is pleased with the results of its major Eurocopter rotorcraft procurement project. “Thanks to this success, we can be proud of operating a helicopter fleet that is without equal in Europe in terms of advanced equipment, efficiency and size,” he added.
The EC155 is a medium-weight, 5-metric-ton-class helicopter in Eurocopter’s Dauphin family. It is powered by two 935 shp. Turbomeca Arriel 2C2 engines for excellent performance, and features a modular design that facilitates the rotorcraft’s use in a range of diverse missions.
In addition to a spacious cabin accommodating seating for up to 13 passengers and two pilots, the EC155 can carry up to 2 metric tons of heavy equipment in the cargo configuration. The modern glass cockpit incorporates digital avionics and a four-axis autopilot, considerably reducing the pilots’ workload and allowing them to concentrate on the more demanding aspects of each mission.
Moreover, the helicopter’s low vibration levels provide ideal conditions for the specialized mission equipment employed by police forces. For the German Federal Police’s EC155 B1s, this equipment includes day-and-night vision cameras, powerful searchlights and loud-hailer systems, a 90-meter winch cable, and an extensive package of data communication systems for the transmission of aerial imagery and video sequences.
In addition to the German Federal Police’s EC155 B1s, the service’s air wing helicopter fleet includes Eurocopter’s EC135 T2i rotorcraft for police work, disaster control, and air rescue operations; the AS332 L1 Super Puma for long-haul transportation, air surveillance missions, interventions by the GSG 9 special operations unit, sea rescue missions, disaster relief in Germany and abroad, and VIP transportation; as well as the EC120, which is used for flight training flights.
